Obituary: Larry Sultan

We’re sad to relay the news that photographer Larry Sultan passed away on Sunday at the age 63. The late master’s work brought an indelible cinematic quality to many a glossy, including the pages of Vanity Fair and W. To fashion folk, he’s probably best known for his surprisingly touching images of porn sets and the absurd luxury of the San Fernando Valley (where he grew up), its languid stars in curlers lounging in various states of undress, or simply extras mulling about. Unlike the garish vérité style of Nan Goldin and Larry Clark, there is a classic tenderness to Sultan's work, an intimacy that verges on the fragile. For this and countless other reasons, he’ll be missed.
